I find the relationship between those movies very interesting. (I checked, in case you had already reviewed Match Point and we had already talked about this, but I couldn't find it.)Anthony Lee Collinshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04220568709463059291noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1003345269984484749.post-17592269560716107632013-08-03T11:06:52.843-04:002013-08-03T11:06:52.843-04:00I really liked this movie, for all the reasons you...I really liked this movie, for all the reasons you state. I thought the narration was very well handled; it made the movie very concise. Sometimes the best course is a balance between "show" and "tell." The four lead actors are all excellent (I think Hall was somewhat underrated because she was a relative unknown and had the least showy part), but of course Cruz owns it. Orson Welles used to say that the best gift you can have as an actor is to be offstage for the first act but to have the rest of the characters talk about you a lot. When you come on in Act 2, the audience is all primed to be impressed. (See: Bill in Kill Bill and Water Burns in The Front Page.) (Welles also had some things to say about the idea that narration is somehow uncinematic. :-) )Anthony Lee Collinshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04220568709463059291noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1003345269984484749.post-28693555389509689642013-08-03T06:36:28.099-04:002013-08-03T06:36:28.099-04:00Ugh, I hated this movie. This is my least favorite of the films I've seen of his.

BUT, Penelope Cruz is the best part of it. I don't think she deserved the Oscar though, because Amy Adams gave a more substantial and mature performance in Doubt. Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13187577008022989336noreply@blogger.com
